5,7,5 – 365
9th October 2015
A haiku and a diary entry, everyday for a year.
Up early this morning to get a free ticket to see John Grant play a set at the Rough Trade East record store. Arriving twenty minutes before the store opens, I am number 36 in the queue. It’s strictly one ticket per person, so Lynne joins me there to get herself a ticket and then uses her incredible charm to schmooze a third ticket for our friend Ingibjörg, who will join us eleven hours later for the gig itself. It’s a good job Lynne is there, because, as I’m often reminded by friends at work, I have no social skills and no social skills means no extra ticket! Lynne and I then head off to have a well earned second breakfast – after all, I got up at 0430 hours and Lynne had battled her way across London to win those tickets and had also had to do some excellent schmoozing.
We reconvene at the venue later and meet Ingibjörg in the queue to get in. The gig itself is brilliant, John and his band play songs from his new album and then finishes with ‘Queen of Denmark’ before returning to the stage with ‘GMF’.
If not Laila’s favourite artist, John is certainly in her top two, along side Richard Hawley (this week’s Later With Jools provided her dream lineup), so it is a shame that she can’t be here with us. By way of consolation, John signs the double pink vinyl album’s cover, wishing Laila a Happy Birthday. It’s a week early but when I get home Laila grabs the album and as grinning from ear to ear.
Missing the music
